Music

Intent 
At DBJA, we are aiming for all children to be confident musicians across all musical skills by the time they leave year 6. We will achieve this by ensuring:

  • Children can listen to music with a critical ear; they can identify styles, genres, instruments, dynamics, phrasing, timbre, texture, structure, emotions etc. They can express their own opinions about a piece eloquently using music-specific terminology and reasoning. 
  • Children can sing and/or play with confidence and increasing accuracy. Children can apply musical ideas e.g. dynamics, rhythm, phrasing etc. to their practice, rehearsal and performances. 
  • Children are exposed to and can understand a variety of forms of musical notation, including traditional Western notation on a staff.  
  • Children can improvise and compose music fluently and without inhibition. They can record these compositions using some form of musical notation (e.g. graphic scores, Western notation) and repeat their compositions in performance following their score. 
  • Children are given varied opportunities for performances throughout the year. Children show the determination and diligence required to rehearse for and perfect a performance or show.

In Year 5 all children learn the guitar taught by Music Specialists from the LBBD Community Music Service, which the school buy into to create a robust music curriculum for our students. They will then have the opportunity to continue with the guitar into year 6 with lessons from the Music Service in school. Here is the web link for more information on this service:

Children listen and appraise music weekly with the opportunity to compose their own piece of music at the end of each term. All children are given the opportunity to perform either as part of an ensemble through Christmas Carol concerts, class assembly or playing the guitar to parents and carers. Year 6 also have an end of year performance to the school and parents which has included performances of a modern day Romeo and Juliet and Grease!

We also have weekly Music Assembly where the children learn key vocabulary, appraise a range of musical styles and learn different signing techniques such as rounds or echo.
